A chemical engineer, with degrees from Cornell and Columbia, Smith, while working at Goodyear Tire and Kraft General Foods, earned two U.S. patents and two European patents. He shifted careers and got into the finance sector. While at Goldman Sachs he became the first person there to focus solely on technology mergers and acquisitions in the San Francisco office. Tech is where he has made the bulk of his fortune.
