Essence Festival issued a cease-and-desist letter to Baldwin & Co., a local, Black-owned coffee and bookstore and event organizer, Lit Diaries LLC, accusing them of using its trademark to deceive customers over the festival weekend. Following public backlash, the cease and desist was dropped, but the incident left a sour taste in the community’s mouth.
