Tyler Perry signed a new multi-year deal with BET Media Group, extending his long-term partnership with Paramount.
As part of the deal, BET has agreed to renew eight of Perry’s shows for BET and its BET+ streamer. Additionally, the network has ordered a new scripted series from Perry, “Route 187.”
“Scott Mills and his team at BET have been incredibly supportive throughout our time working together, and I’m excited to continue bringing these stories to the screen. I’m grateful to our loyal audiences for watching week after week and engaging these stories,” Perry said in a statement.
“Tyler Perry’s Sistas” will be renewed for its eighth season, “Tyler Perry’s The Oval” for Season 6, and “Tyler Perry’s Assisted Living” for a sixth season. “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne” will also be renewed for its sixth season on BET, as well as re-ups for “Tyler Perry’s Zatima,” “Tyler Perry’s Ruthless,” Tyler Perry’s Bruh” and “All The Queen’s Men.”
Last year, Perry slammed Paramount Global’s “disrespectful” handling of the bidding process for the potential majority stake sale of its BET enterprise.
In March 2023, the company started a bidding war after announcing months back that it would sell the media group, including VH1 and BET Studios, streamer BET+ and the BET channel. Several high-profile potential buyers stepped forward, including Perry, Weather Channel owner Byron Allen and REVOLT CEO, Sean “Diddy” Combs.
However, in August, Paramount Global reversed its decision to sell a majority stake in its BET Media Group despite receiving bids ranging from $2 billion to $3 billion.
“I was disappointed about it for a number of reasons,” he said during a Bloomberg Equality Summit, as reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “The way it happened was disrespectful in a lot of ways.”
The network says it is “thrilled” to continue it’s working relationship with the movie mogul.
“Tyler Perry is simply without rival as a creator of content that powerfully resonates with audiences across genres, formats, and platforms. Our programming partnership with Tyler – undoubtably the largest deal ever in the industry with a Black creator – has been hugely successful; delivering the number one series across all TV among Black audiences and five of the top 10 series on cable among Black viewers,” said Scott Mills, President & CEO of BET Media Group. “We are thrilled to extend our extraordinary relationship with Tyler and to continue to be the home of the largest and most diverse collection of new Tyler Perry content for years to come.”
