We’ve always known Black women are the blueprint for beauty, but Spelman College is making sure we’re the ones running the labs, too!
On Oct. 10, the college’s groundbreaking Cosmetic Science program was honored with the prestigious ‘Investing in the Future of Beauty’ award at the Bronner Bros. 2nd Annual Beauty Icon Awards.
Rightly celebrated for its incredible leadership in driving inclusive beauty innovation and training the next generation of Black women chemists and industry professionals, the HBCU is proving that our magic belongs in the research facility just as much as the vanity. We aren’t just consuming the products anymore – we are formulating them from the molecule up.
Leyte Winfield, Ph.D., a dedicated professor of chemistry at Spelman and founder of the college’s chemistry and science program, proudly accepted the distinguished accolade. Dr.Winfield, known for her engaging teaching style and commitment to fostering a love for science among her students, emphasized the importance of this recognition for both the program and the institution.
“We created this because we understood that we needed to empower black women to be the innovators and the experts in this beauty industry. We also wanted to make sure that we could direct them into these careers,” she shared.
Dr. Winfield continued. “We’re in a moment where Black women in STEM are considered the invisible scientists, so we’re very intentional about raising visibility around the contributions that [they] have made to this industry and making sure they have our support as they design the products that we need.”
Breaking Barriers and Making History
It’s also important to note that Spelman isn’t just participating in the beauty industry. They are completely rewriting the textbook.
This revolutionary program is the first-ever undergraduate cosmetic science program at a Historically Black College and University.
And if that wasn’t historic enough, it is also only the second program of its kind in the United States.
What started out as a highly popular online certificate program back in 2023 – surging from 150 to over 750 eager applicants in just four terms – has officially evolved into a massive win for undergraduate STEM education. Today, students can dive deep with a cosmetic chemistry concentration for chemistry majors or add a cosmetic science minor to their degree.
Changing the Face of the Narrative
As we know, Black women have always been the ultimate trendsetters. They’re also the highest-spending consumers when it comes to cosmetics and hair care.
However, Black-owned beauty brands make up a meager 2.5% of the market. And for decades, the products on our shelves were rarely formulated by people who actually understood our unique hair coils or melanin-rich skin.
Spelman’s program is directly targeting these longstanding gaps in beauty research and by putting Black women in the driver’s seat as lead formulators, researchers and molecular scientists, they are driving the future of inclusive beauty innovation while ensuring that our community is no longer just buying the products, but actively inventing them.
Standing Among Giants
The Beauty Icon Awards were created with a beautiful mission: to lift up, honor and celebrate the heroes, innovators and trailblazers who are actively shaping Black beauty culture.
And Spelman wasn’t just a casual addition to the guest list. The college stood shoulder-to-shoulder with absolute industry heavyweights like Lisa Price of Carol’s Daughter, Olamide Olowe of Topicals and the pioneers behind Design Essentials. Presented by the culture’s favorite, ECO Style, Spelman’s big moment shines a major spotlight on this program as a critical educational pipeline. It is expanding how young Black women see their potential in the beauty space, proving they can build the powerhouse scientific and business leadership this industry desperately needs.
Mixing Chemistry, Culture and Pure Excellence
There’s nothing quite like watching an HBCU get its well-deserved flowers on such a massive stage.
Spelman’s cutting-edge Cosmetic Science program is doing so much more than teaching chemistry. It is opening doors, shifting mindsets and building a legendary pipeline for the next generation of beauty bosses.
And this award is a beautiful reminder that when we invest in our own talent, everyone wins.
Huge congratulations to Spelman College for leading the charge and beautifully designing the future of the industry we love!
