The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art will debut a new exhibit focusing on a series of works by Black women artists to honor their experiences.

Set to debut on Sept. 9 at the Bank of America Gallery and the Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby Ed.D. Academic Center, the exhibit will honor the artists’ dreams and imagination.

The exhibit will also highlight the growth of Spelman College’s art collection. It will focus on its history as the leading institution for showcasing the work of women of the African Diaspora. Several types of art will be on display, including sculptures, textiles, paintings, photography and other forms of mixed media.

Among the other artists on display are Emma Amos, Firelei Baez, Sonia Boyce, Beverly Buchanan, Elizabeth Catlell, Renee Cox, Myra Greene, Valerie Maynard, Deborah Roberts, Nellie Mae Rowe and Lorna Simpson.

Over 50 artists will be on display altogether.

“Between Here & Infinity brings a fresh view to the evolving Spelman collection, staging conversations between works across media and across time,” said Spelman Museum Director Liz Andrews in a statement.  “This vibrant presentation underscores the generations of curators and artists who have dreamed this museum into existence and made it a place where Black women’s artistic expression is at the center of art history and futures.”

Previously, the museum has held several exhibits highlighting women who have changed art history.

Last year, the Spelman Museum held an exhibit dedicated to the work of Nancy Elizabeth Prophet, an Afro-Indigenous artist whose works primarily revolved around wood and stone. Although fewer than two dozen of her works still exist, the exhibit included approximately 7 of her sculptures, including “Head in Ebony,” which was previously owned by W.E.B. Du Bois. Other archival material relating to her work, including archival photographs and excerpts from her diary in Paris, was also placed on display.

The Spelman Museum also recently included an exhibit featuring the works of Amanda Williams. The artist uses oil and watercolors to create paintings about Black identity, focusing on culture, society and politics as well.

The museum also showcased the work of Harmonia Rosales. Self-taught, Rosales creates large-scale oil paintings dedicated to empowering Black women by weaving them in as artistic subjects in works inspired by African Yoruba, Greek mythology and Christianity.

Her work includes reimaginations of “The Creation of God,” “The Birth of Venus” and “The Virgin.”
