Audible announced that the true-crime drama podcast, “Finding Tamika,” is now available on its platform.
“Finding Tamika” is the first podcast release from SBH Productions, founded by comedian Kevin Hart and popular media personality Charlamagne Tha God.
The series is hosted by actress Erika Alexander who played lawyer Maxine Shaw on “Living Single.”
The podcast highlights the numbers of missing Black women and girls not covered by the media. In the first series, Alexander searches for Tamika Huston, a 25-year-old Black woman from Spartanburg, SC, who went missing in 2004.
“I believe in storytelling, and I believe that if we tell better stories, we will get better results,” Alexander told NewsOne‘s Anoa Changa. “Storytelling is the best way to provide not insulation, but armor for the future.”
Tamika’s story is told by her loved ones. Alexander explained why the series matters.
“I want her legacy to be more than the girl who was killed and who nobody wanted to talk about,” Huston’s aunt, Rebekah Howard, said. “It was so much more than that. And this allows me through Erika to tell more of her story.”
Howard also featured on the recent HBO documentary, “Black & Missing.”
“I was sending (press) releases, I was calling producers, I was calling news desks, every network, every website I could think of, and I hit a brick wall,” Howard told the producers. “In my mind I’m thinking, ‘Well, here’s my niece. She’s young, she’s beautiful, she’s missing. Her story is just as compelling.’ The only difference is that Tamika’s Black; Natalee Holloway is white.
Christopher L. Hampton was eventually charged in 2006 with her murder and later pleaded guilty. Hampton confessed to killing her with a hot iron during an argument at his apartment. He was sentenced to life in prison.
