Reggie White is one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history. Unfortunately, this generation didn’t get a chance to see him play to understand just how dominant he was.
Well, thanks to ESPN, they’ll soon be able to.
The network will be featuring White in “The Minister of Defense,” their latest entry in the award-winning series. The doc will tell the story of the Pro Football Hall of Famer and ordained evangelical minister, who passed away in 2004 at the age of 43.
White dominated in college at the University of Tennessee, setting the all-time sack record. After finishing his college career, he signed with the Memphis Showboats of the USFL, which folded after two seasons. The Eagles held his rights and the team selected him with the fourth overall pick in the 1984 supplemental draft.
In his first season with the team in 1985, White had 13 sacks, which was a sign of things to come. In his eight years with the team, he amassed 124 sacks. He then signed with the Packers as a free agent and continued his domination by registering 68.5 sacks over six years. He also won his first and only Super Bowl in 1996 when Green Bay beat the Patriots 35-21 in Super Bowl XXXI.
White ended his NFL career in 2000 with the Panthers and finished in second place, behind Bruce Smith, on the all-time sack leader list with 198 (Smith had 200). He was posthumously inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on his first ballot in 2006, two years after his passing.
While the documentary doesn’t have an air date yet, we can’t wait to relive the incredible times we had watching White, aka “The Minister of Defense.”
