Queen Bey Strikes Again: Saving a Nigerian Restaurant With a Grant and Influence

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, the multitalented, universally-adored artist, continues to make headlines for her philanthropic efforts, illustrating the power and importance of supporting black-owned businesses. During her sold-out Renaissance World Tour, the pop star graciously granted over $8,000 to Chuku’s, a struggling Nigerian restaurant in London, through her philanthropic organization, the BeyGood Foundation.

Owned by the sibling duo, Ifeyinwa and Emeka Frederick, Chuku’s was among ten selected small businesses that received a grant from Bey’s foundation, outshining over 500 other applicants. The grants were distributed during the Black Parade Small Business Impact luncheon, an event organized by the foundation to acknowledge individuals and communities affected by economic adversities.

As reported by the Miami Herald, Emeka expressed gratitude for this lifeline, remarking, “This grant couldn’t be more welcome.” He emphasized the pressing challenges faced by establishments like Chuku’s due to pandemic-induced lockdowns and the cost of living crisis. The grant allows them to continue their passionate pursuit of providing traditional Nigerian dishes to their patrons.

Interestingly, Beyoncé’s contribution to Chuku’s isn’t limited to the grant. Given its proximity to the Tottenham arena, which hosted five of Bey’s concerts, the restaurant quickly became a fan favorite. Last year, the owners initiated a challenge aiming for 600 bookings in six weeks. The response surpassed their expectations with 800 reservations, including A-list celebs and everyday people who enjoyed their culinary offerings.

In the words of Ifeyinwa, this generous donation will facilitate their mission of promoting Nigerian culture. “I still can’t quite believe that Beyoncé has backed our restaurant—it feels a bit surreal,” she said. The story of Chuku’s underscores the immense influence of celebrity endorsement and how it can be harnessed for good. The BeyGood Foundation’s intervention embodies the spirit of community support, providing hope in times of adversity.

As Beyoncé shines on stage, her foundation is illuminating the pathway for small businesses. It’s a testament to the fact that successful black entrepreneurs can uplift the broader community, creating a ripple effect of prosperity. Through her actions, Beyoncé is not only reinforcing her commitment to supporting Black-owned businesses but also inspiring others to do the same.
