After Kevin Sumlin and Arizona parted ways in 2020 after the Wildcats started 0-5, he took a break from coaching.
Two years later, Sumlin returned to the gridiron, this time as the GM and head coach of the USFL’s Houston Gamblers.
It was a return to his coaching roots as he began his college head coaching career at the University of Houston. Over his four seasons with the Cougars (2008 – 2011), the team went 35-17, including 12-1 in his final season.
Then he moved to Texas A&M, where he led the Aggies to a 51-26 record in his 6 years with the team (2012 – 2017).
During those two college coaching stints, Sumlin was named Conference USA Coach of the Year twice and SEC coach of the year once.
Now, almost three years removed from his last college coaching job, Sumlin is returning to college, this time as the co-offensive coordinator/tight ends coach at the University of Maryland.
After a one-year stint in the USFL with the Gamblers, where he went 3-7, Sumlin starts a new chapter in his coaching career at Maryland under head coach Mike Locksley, who led the team to an 8-5 record last season in his fourth year with the team.
Sumlin will replace Don Enos, who took the offensive coordinator job at Arkansas, and Mike Miller, who left to become Charlotte’s offensive coordinator. The program hasn’t announced who will be the other co-offensive coordinator.
Maryland ranked 55th in the country with 401.5 ypg and 67th with 28.2 ppg. Sumlin will be coaching Taulia Tagovailoa, who is returning to the Terps for a final season.
