Deion Sanders has been the big name in HBCU athletics over the last few weeks, but today Kevin Durant joined the list of athletes and personalities offering support to HBCU institutions.

The Brooklyn Nets star and the Durant Family Foundation announced a donation of $500,000 to Bowie State.

The funds will be used to help upgrade the AC Jordan Arena located in the Leonidas S. James Physical Education Complex. They include a brand new basketball court, new bleachers and press box enhancements. Durant and his family foundation will also create a scholarship fund for students in the Durant Center College Track who decide to attend Bowie State.

“We are dedicated to providing resources and possibilities to students for higher education, especially in Prince George’s County,” said Wanda Durant, who leads the Durant Family Foundation.  “Bowie State was the perfect place to make a meaningful impact.”

The university expressed its gratitude for Durant’s generous gift.

“We’re grateful for the resources that Kevin Durant and his family foundation have generously donated to Bowie State University to advance student success in achieving their academic goals,” said Bowie State President Aminta Breaux. “His contributions will go a long way towards updating our facilities and ensure a top-tier athletic experience for all of our students. The foundation has already built a network of community-centric services within the Durant Center in Prince George’s County that is exemplary.”

Per the release, this is Durant’s latest philanthropic effort in Prince George’s County. In 2019, his foundation partnered with College Track to create the Durant Center in Suitland, MD to “help first-generation and low-income students pursue higher education.”
