Karen Hunter paused her show to address the guilty verdict against Karmelo Anthony, the Black teenager convicted in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a Texas high school track meet.
Anthony, now 19, was 17 when the confrontation happened on April 2, 2025, in Frisco, Texas. Hunter said the case has left her with several questions, particularly about race, jury selection and whether the teen received a fair trial.
“I want to know what the jury makeup was,” Hunter told her listeners. “I want to know what the demographic makeup is of Collin County.”
Hunter noted that Anthony had entered a school tent before the altercation began. “His very presence was a problem. His complexion was a problem.”
During the trial, the defense argued Anthony acted in self-defense, with Hunter saying he had been “surrounded by several people much larger than he was” and that details such as a bag being snatched came out during the case.
“Why did they rush this?” she asked. “Why were there no juries of his peers, people who look like him, on the jury? Why did they start deliberation on a Saturday? What was this about? Was this about justice?”
According to Hunter, the verdict forces Black families to think more deeply about where their children are safe.
“How many of us have to now examine our choices as it relates to our babies and where we raise them?” she asked. “Our children need to be able to walk freely about the cabin where they live. […]This is something deeper,” Hunter added. “Could he really get justice?”
