    Hood Medicine: Saving the Hood from Health Disparities and Disinformation

    If you tuned in to the Lurie Daniel Favors Show today on SiriusXM Urban View Channel 126, you probably heard a regular fan favorite segment; the #RoutineCheckUp with public health guerrillas, the Hood Medicine team.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/C5yT5wYLf6M/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

    The non-profit organization is featured on the show every Monday in the second hour and provides critical information that global majority communities should be aware of in regards to public health and health disparities. Hood Medicine also spotlights different grassroots organizations dedicated to public health. For instance today Lurie Daniel Favors spoke to the founder of grassroots campaign, MaskTogetherAmerica, Julie Lam; along with Hood Medicine’s media and research director, Dr. Shanice “Neecey” Hudson. Together, the pair broke down COVID-19 updates and concerns for the summer, as well as the rising anti-vax/anti-mask propaganda and how this can affect immunocompromised individuals.

    While quality public health treatment should be a necessity rather than a luxury for everyone, it doesn’t always seem like this when there’s unfair treatment in the medical scene based on race, gender, class, etc. This is why organizations like Hood Medicine are imperative to our communities. Instead of being looked at as a check or just another statistic, Hood Medicine’s mission is to equip one with the tools to get themselves and their families the best care possible-something every human being deserves. They’re here to break down health disinformation that targets communities of color, and push for health equity across all medical fields.

    With a clear mission to save historically marginalized communities from systemic inequities and targeted ploys in public health, Hood Medicine has put together a strong research collaborative team and a media team. Research collaborators take time to break down certain concerns or health deceptions so that they can be understood in a full, digestible way, and the media team takes the time to get the information out to those who need to hear it. While this system has been efficient and helpful to many, the non-profit wants to continue to grow and reach as many people as possible in order to reach their goal of maintaining health equity across the nation regardless of race, gender or class. A great way to help the team achieve this is through donating to the cause.

    Since September of 2023, the Urban View Channel on SiriusXM has dedicated each month to different crowdfunding platforms for non-profits that are devoted to helping, educating and enriching global majority communities. This initiative is called Urban View Gives, and can be found via the website: www.urbanviewgives.com-which will direct you to the donation site of whatever the month’s non-profit spotlight is.

    This month, Urban View Gives is highlighting none other than Hood Medicine themselves, and this is a great reminder of all the important work they do to help people of color and those disenfranchised. Public health is incredibly important and the pandemic showed us how dangerous medical misinformation can be. So, if this organization resonates with you, please consider donating to the cause. They also offer volunteer opportunities which can all be accessed via their website at: https://www.hoodmedicine.org/

    Thank you for supporting @Hood_Medicine's vision of a world where we value the health of every community & our mission to use science & tech to improve health outcomes for BIPOC communities, empower families to make healthy choices & help them find trusted care & resources.
