The Hub Entertainment Watch List: The Perfect Find
Hollywood talents Gabrielle Union and Keith Powers are merging generations in an unlikely way. The two have come together for a “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” (1998) style film based on the novel “The Perfect Find.” The book was written by Tia Williams and published in 2016, but the film was brought to life with the help of Leigh Davenport and Numa Perrier.
A messy public breakup and public humiliation sent the high-powered career woman, Jenna (Gabrielle Union), on a downward spiral. The film’s opening scenes show Jenna back home with her parents before being told it’s time for her to go and take her life back. After a pep talk from her mother, the socialite returns to New York in an attempt to revive her once-thriving fashion career.
Upon arrival in New York, viewers are able to see Jenna plan her rise to the top, and like most love stories, the main character is nothing without the support of her closest gal-pals. In this case, Jenna’s two best friends are Elodie (Lala Anthony) and Billie (Aisha Hinds), who bring her out for a night on the town. During their outing, Jenna is pursued by a young partygoer, Eric (Keith Powers), who ends up making a lasting impact. After fleeing from Eric at the party following an awkward moment, Jenna quickly finds that their paths are meant to cross. The duo are reconnected by a shared employer, which sparks a chain of events for their uncanny romance.
Gabrielle Union is no stranger to being in a relationship where an age gap exists. “I lived it,” the actress told USA Today when drawing on the similarities between herself and her character Jenna. Union is married to NBA player Dwyane Wade, who happens to be nine years younger than her. Despite the age gap, the two have been in a highly-publicized marriage since 2014.
The overall plot of the film is solid. However, the story develops quickly, which leaves room for unanswered questions. There is not much talk on the specifics surrounding her previous breakup and there are only vague references to the “frenemies” energy exuded in Jenna’s relationship with her boss, Darcy (Gina Torres). While the film may feel a bit rushed, there are sure to be some laughs throughout. Interested viewers can check out “The Perfect Find” with a subscription to Netflix. And for book lovers who want to read the novel, it is available for purchase at Hachette Book Group, Barnes and Noble, Amazon, Walmart and more.
