Today, we are excited to introduce you to three new books that will not only inspire you with mouthwatering recipes and stories but also delve into the history and impact of Black Americans in the food industry. From celebrating phenomenal Black women and femmes in “For The Culture,” to exploring the complex relationship between fast food and the Black community in “White Burgers, Black Cash,” and finally, toasting to the vibrant cocktail culture in “Juke Joints, Jazz Clubs, and Juice,” these books promise to be enlightening, empowering, and most importantly, delicious.

For The Culture: Phenomenal Black Women and Femmes in Food: Interviews, Inspiration, and Recipes

Klancy Miller’s must-have anthology spotlights leading Black women and femmes shaping today’s food and hospitality landscape, sharing their stories, lessons, and recipes. Featuring influential figures like Leah Penniman and Ashtin Berry, alongside tributes to pioneering matriarchs such as Edna Lewis, this collection captures an invaluable oral history of a culinary movement. With stunning illustrations and photography, this book offers inspiration and guidance for food enthusiasts from the trailblazers who’ve paved the way for future visionaries.

White Burgers, Black Cash: Fast Food from Black Exclusion to Exploitation

In “White Burgers, Black Cash,” Naa Oyo A. Kwate delves into the complex history of fast food in America, tracing its evolution from catering to white urban and suburban customers to its current disproportionate presence in Black communities. Centering on major cities like Chicago, New York City, and Washington, D.C., Kwate investigates the racial and spatial transformation of fast food giants, including White Castle, KFC, and McDonald’s. Through deep research and gripping storytelling, this book exposes the inequalities ingrained in the American fast-food industry and its impact on Black communities.
