Contrary to popular opinion, the WNBA is much more than just Caitlin Clark.
Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese has been on a hot streak recently and has the world tuning in. She’s been dominating her competition and is making a name for herself in the league after becoming a star at LSU.
On Sunday, Reese had an amazing game and scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed 16 rebounds while shooting over 60% from the field. That performance came against the Indiana Fever and fellow rookie, Caitlin Clark, reigniting a rivalry that began in college.
Reese has been on fire lately, recording a double-double in eight straight games. That’s the longest streak by a rookie in WNBA history. Angel also grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds last week against Dallas.
The self-anointed “Chi Barbie” has backed up her on-court passion and energy off of it.
Reese has one of the top-selling jerseys in the league and is one of the reasons why ratings have soared this season. She’s also been a strong advocate and role model for young black athletes, particularly young black women who are inspired by her confidence and fearlessness.
But Angel is not the only newcomer making a significant impact on the WNBA. Her teammate and fellow rookie, Kamilla Cardoso, is also an exceptionally talented player who is making her presence known in the WNBA.
Cardoso, who many feel was the leader of the NCAA championship-winning South Carolina Gamecocks, was the third pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft. She and Reese recently made history by becoming the WNBA’s first set of rookie teammates to record 15+ points and 10+ rebounds in the same game since 1998.
The two young players are bringing a new energy to the league and are the cornerstones of the franchise.
Clarke has, unquestionably, brought a lot of attention to the WNBA and women’s basketball in general, but she’s not the only reason why the league and sport are drawing in fans.
