Rashida Jones Steps Down as MSNBC President After 4 Historic Years

In a move that marks the end of an era, Rashida Jones, the trailblazing president of MSNBC, announced on Tuesday that she is stepping down after an impactful four years at the helm of the cable news network.

Jones made history in 2021 as the first Black executive to lead a major U.S. television news network.

The announcement, shared with MSNBC anchors, leaders, and staff, confirmed that Jones will remain in an advisory role until March. In the interim, Rebecca Kutler, MSNBC’s senior vice president of content strategy, will step into the role of president. Kutler, who Jones recruited to the network in 2022, will help guide MSNBC through this transitional moment.

“I came to this decision over the holidays while reflecting on our remarkable journey and the many successes we’ve achieved together as a team,” Jones shared in a heartfelt memo to staff. “This has been the most rewarding chapter of my professional career, and I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished, which has been made possible only by you.”

Jones’s tenure began in February 2021 during a fraught moment in American history—shortly after the inauguration of President Joe Biden and the chaos of the January 6th Capitol riots. Her leadership guided MSNBC to major ratings victories during pivotal political events.

Jones’s departure comes amid significant changes for MSNBC and its parent company. Late last year, Comcast announced plans to spin off several cable networks, including MSNBC, CNBC, and USA Network, into a new publicly traded entity, SpinCo. This shift reflects the evolving television landscape, where traditional cable channels face stiff competition from streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Mark Lazarus, the incoming CEO of SpinCo, praised Jones for her steady hand during a tumultuous news cycle. “Rashida has expertly navigated MSNBC through a years-long, unrelenting, and unprecedented news cycle, all while driving the network to record viewership and making investments in nonlinear businesses,” Lazarus noted in a memo to staff.
