Vice President Kamala Harris holds a slight lead over Republican nominee Donald Trump, according to new polls published yesterday,
In a CBS News and YouGov poll, Harris was found to have led against Trump by a slim margin, drawing in 50%- 49% of national likely voters. The numbers are slightly down from a mid-October survey which found that she led 51% to 48% nationwide.
In another poll jointly conducted by ABC News and Ipsos, Harris led Trump by a wider margin, leading 51% to 49% among likely voters nationwide.
According to the CBS poll, the deciding factors in the presidential race will be the key battleground states; they projected that both nominees are tied 50%- 50% in states like Pennsylvania and Georgia.
Each candidate also received more support with specific topics.
While Harris was found to have scored well with issues such as protecting democracy and widening access to health care, Trump reportedly led when it came to topics such as the economy and immigration.
In their poll, ABC News noted the similarities in this year’s trends to those seen during the 2020 presidential election.
“In one difference, Harris outperforms Biden four years ago among college-educated white women. She’s also strong among college graduates overall,” said researchers. “Another difference, though, is an important one for Trump: He’s essentially even with Harris among independents, a group Biden won by 13 points in 2020, vs. a scant Harris +1 now. The candidate who’s won independents has won nine of the last 12 presidential elections.”
The results of the polls come as both candidates continue their campaigns.
On Sunday, Vice President Harris made several stops in Philadelphia. The city is a pivotal one as Pennsylvania holds 270 of electoral votes.
Throughout the day, Harris visited the Black-owned bookstore Hakim’s Bookstore & Gift Shop, a barbershop, a Puerto Rican-run restaurant and a church service in a predominantly Black church to win over votes.
At the bookstore, she was joined by Mayor Cherelle Parker. In addition to addressing the threats another Trump presidency can pose, Harris spoke at length about her campaign’s effort to “build a broad coalition” while emphasizing the role that the younger generation can have in deciding the outcome of this year’s election.
“The election is here, and the choice is truly in your hands,” Harris said during one of her Philadelphia events on Sunday, per CNN. “The path to victory runs right through all the leaders who are here, all of you.”
