Democratic Reps Announce New Hip Hop Task Force

Democratic representatives recently announced the formation of a new task force dedicated to hip hop.

In a press conference held on Wednesday, Reps. Jamaal Bowman and Hank Johnson from New York and Georgia introduced the Hip Hop Power and Justice Task Force which is considered to be the first of its kind.

Through the task force, the legislators, alongside other lawmakers such as Reps. Delia Ramirez and Andre Carson, will use the “cultural capital” of hip hop to create initiatives that will address political issues.

At the offical announcement, Rep. Hank Johnson cited the RAP Act as a potential building block for the new project.

First introduced in 2022 and brought up again in 2023, the RAP Act was introduced by both Johnson and Bowman as a way to protect artists in court. Through the bill, it would limit the usage of lyrics in civil proceedings.

“Hip hop is not just music. It’s not just an art form,” said Bowman at the press conference. “It’s a culture with a multi-billion dollar economy. But we haven’t harnessed the power of it yet, to make transformative change in legislation.”

With their latest initiative, the legislators will be joined by the Black Music Action Coalition.

The announcement of the Black Music Action Coalition’s involvement comes amidst the launch of their new collaboration with Live Nation.

Together, both nonprofits will be helping support new talent to create a diverse and equitable music industry. For one week, students will be traveling to Los Angeles to get a first hand experience in the music industry, studying the roles available.

Keynote speakers will attend events for the students.

After the experience, both the Black Music Action Coalition and Live Nation will be providing participants with additional opportunities. A 4-month paid internship at Live Nation will be offered alongside a place at the Live Nation’s School of Live Apprenticeship Program.

Through a six-month paid apprenticeship, the students will also have the ability to receive a long term position in the industry.

“BMAC is proud to partner with Live Nation to launch this program and help create opportunities and access for Black professionals interested in pursuing a career in the live music industry,” said the Co-Founder, President, and CEO of the Black Music Action Coalition, Willie “Prophet” Stiggers, per a statement. “BMAC is in this mission towards equity for the long haul and we are honored to have the support from Live Nation to allow key staff and operations to continue this work.”

In #IL03 & Chicago, Hip Hop has helped build bridges across cultures! I'm beyond proud to join my friend @RepBowman in introducing the Congressional Hip Hop Power & Justice Task Force to change how we engage with #HipHop, recognize its truest contributions, and work on… pic.twitter.com/U5HlPbbUxD
