R&B singer Cassie and rapper/producer Sean “Diddy” Combs came to a settlement with their lawsuit on Friday-just one day after it was filed. Cassie-whose full name is Casandra Ventura-filed a lengthy lawsuit against Combs on Thursday accusing him of sexual assault including sex trafficking, rape, abuse and more while citing multiple detailed instances.
While details of the settlement were not disclosed to the public, Ventura’s lawsuit was attainable due to New York’s Adult Survivors Act (ASA). This law allowed a one year time window for sexual assault victims to file civil lawsuits against the abuser. The law is set to expire in one week on November 24.
“I have decided to resolve this matter amicably on terms that I have some level of control,” Ventura said to NBC News in a statement following the settlement. “I want to thank my family, fans and lawyers for their unwavering support.”
Combs also referenced an “amicable” resolve to the lawsuit. “I wish Cassie and her family all the best. Love,” the producer said in a statement.
Ventura and Combs had reportedly been in a relationship for almost a decade starting when Ventura was only 19 years old while Combs was 37. Ventura’s claims in the lawsuit included that Combs “asserted complete control over Ms. Ventura’s personal and professional life and demanded obedience, loyalty, and silence.”
Combs had refuted the allegations. NBC News quoted his lawyer calling the claims “offensive and outrageous.”
Ventura also cited the ASA in her statements following the settlement.
“With the expiration of New York’s Adult Survivors Act fast approaching, it became clear that this was an opportunity to speak up about the trauma I have experienced and that I will be recovering from for the rest of my life,” she said to CNN.
