In April, the Portland Trailblazers acquired the rights to add a G League team in the city, making it the league’s 31st franchise. Yesterday, the team revealed the team name as Rip City Remix.
Rip City Remix begins play during the 2023-24 season, which means that the Phoenix Suns will be the only remaining NBA team without a G League affiliate.
“This is an exciting day for Rip City and the next chapter in Trail Blazers basketball,” said Portland Trail Blazers President of Business Operations Dewayne Hankins in a statement. “We are thrilled to launch this team in the North Portland community, with a name and brand inspired by our fans, culture and region. Rip City Remix games will be fun, family friendly, and accessible, and we look forward to seeing you on the court this upcoming season.”
This season the team will be led by head coach Jim Moran, GM Danny Connors, assistant GM Eugene “Pooh” Jeter and President Hannah Grauert.
According to the release:
“Rip City Remix is an homage to the vintage era of the Portland Trail Blazers, and emulates the colors and an identity akin to the 1970s, which is the era the Trail Blazers were born. The concept of Rip City Remix was inspired by the Portland community and fans — a group of creators, crafters, DIY’ers, makers, and trailblazers.”
The essence of the team will be on display at games, which will be family-friendly events that will combine basketball, culture and music.
The team begins its inaugural season at the Chiles Center on the University of Portland’s campus in North Portland this fall.
