The Weekend Entertainment Recap: May 22nd

The WNBA welcomed the return of Brittney Griner to the court. Vice President Kamala Harris was among those celebrating her return on Friday. The move comes five months after the Phoenix Mercury star was released from Russian custody. The basketball star’s return was welcomed by the crowd as Griner received a standing ovation during the game against the Los Angeles Sparks. Although the crowd was behind Griner, her team was ultimately unsuccessful in her first appearance as they were defeated 94 to 71.

Black music artists also received their flowers in a variety of ways this weekend. The 8th Annual Black Music Honors was held on Friday and recognized industry talents such as Missy Elliot, Jeffrey Osbourne and SWV. The star-studded two-hour event seeks to honor artists who have influenced and made significant contributions to American music. Black Music Honors was hosted by the Grammy award-winning singer, LeToya Luckett and comedian DeRay Davis.

Attendees could hear performances from Sevyn Streeter, David Banner, Tweet, Robin Thicke and more. Viewers will be able to watch the ceremony as it will premiere on the Stellar Network on June 3rd at 8 p.m. ET.

R&B legends, SWV, received double honors over the weekend. The group was first celebrated as icons at the Black Music Honors ceremony and they also were inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame. Since 1997, the Bronx Walk of Fame has allowed Bronx natives to be celebrated for their work and contributions to their respective industries. Two of the three group members, Coko and Lelee, are natives of the borough and they were joined by Taj. The ladies endured rain showers to see the unveiling of their street sign.

Megan Thee Stallion was also a topic of celebration as two new wax figures of her arrived at the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum on Saturday. The Grammy award-winning artist now has two wax figures available at the museum’s Las Vegas and New York locations. The Las Vegas figure depicts the H-Town Hottie in a newsprint catsuit inspired by her album, Good News while the New York figure shows the rapper lying down in a flashy bikini – and both looks were completed with a cowboy hat.

While music artists were celebrated, DJ Envy and Rick Ross were busy debating whose car show was better. Rick Ross fired the first shots on Thursday despite facing permit issues with his own show. DJ Envy took a moment to respond on his radio show, The Breakfast Club, saying that those who participate in his show offer higher-quality cars when compared to those that Ross’ show presents. Ross did not take well to the comments as he fired back and decided to include DJ Envy’s wife and kids in the conversation.

The rapper posted a video essentially referring to DJ Envy and his family as the help. Although both men are fighting for the number one spot, it may be beneficial for them to join forces, especially with Rick Ross having issues getting the needed permits to host his show.
