This week, Florida’s Gov. Ron DeSantis doubled down on his efforts to ban books with supposed “race based teaching.” Under Florida’s House Bill, 1467 schoolbooks must be reviewed by a district employee holding a valid educational media specialist certificate to ensure they’re free of pornography or certain race-based teachings.

In this clip, Karen Hunter welcomes author Christina Proenza-Coles to discuss DeSantis’ controversial policy.

Author Christina Proenza-Coles holds a dual doctorate in sociology and history from the New School for Social Research. She has been a lifelong student of American culture and history while living and working in Miami, New York, and Charlottesville. She was an Assistant Professor of the Atlantic World/African Diaspora at Virginia State University from 2004 to 2011 and has taught as an adjunct professor at Fordham University, the Cooper Union, and the University of Virginia.
