Farewell to the Iconic ‘Ghetto Burger’: Ann’s Snack Bar Closes After 51 Years

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Ann’s Snack Bar, the iconic Atlanta restaurant known for its beloved “Ghetto Burger.” that once made an appearance on the SHOWTIME series Billions. After 51 years of serving up delicious burgers and making headlines, the restaurant closed its doors at the beginning of the pandemic and has not reopened since. The building that housed Ann’s Snack Bar is now for sale, with the Price family, relatives of the late proprietor Ann Price, asking for $650,000.

Ann Price, better known to her customers as “Miss Ann,” opened her restaurant in the early 1970s. It quickly became a local institution, with the “ghetto burger” becoming the restaurant’s signature menu item. In 2010, the New York Times reported that Ann’s Snack Bar was listed for sale for $1.5 million, with Miss Ann stating that “people come here from all over the world, people from every race. Everybody wants to know: what is a Ghetto Burger?” The burger, consisting of two thick, seasoned patties and a variety of toppings including cheese, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, ketchup, mustard, chili, and deep-fried bacon, was hailed as the best burger in America by the Wall Street Journal.

Miss Ann was known for her larger-than-life personality, with her eight house rules posted on the wall of the restaurant and a reputation for not tolerating any misbehavior from her customers. Despite the restaurant’s success, the Price family struggled to keep it running after Miss Ann’s death in 2015. In 2018, James Price, who had taken over day-to-day operations in 2010, stated that he was “looking for an exit strategy.” The pandemic provided the opportunity for the family to close the restaurant and move on, with the building being listed for sale this month.
