UnDocuBlack: Dr. Yatta Kiazolu Shares Her Experience of Getting Her Green Card Through LRIF

Dr. Yatta Kiazolu is a beneficiary of the Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act and recently received her green card through the program in 2021.

In the below video, she shares her experience and journey to getting her Green Card through LRIF.

Dr. Yatta Kiazolu is a University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellow in Ethnic Studies at UC San Diego. She is a member of the UndocuBlack Network, which provides resources for Liberians seeking LRIF and is fighting hard for the successful implementation of the program.

What is the Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness (LRIF)?

Liberians in the United States previously benefited from temporary status and protection from the 1990s until 2019. Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness (LRIF) passed Congress in December 2019.

This is the first immigration bill passed in decades with a pathway to citizenship and it’s for Black immigrants. LRIF is a program that allows certain Liberians living in the US since Nov. 14, 2014, and their family members to adjust their status to lawful permanent residents, obtain Green Cards, and eventually become U.S. citizens.

Family members of eligible Liberians can also apply. A green card means protection from deportation, status, and work authorization–you can stop living in limbo and can pursue dreams, can lay down roots here in the United States without having to fear deportations and removals and renewal deadlines.

All LRIF applications must be filed with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) by Dec. 20, 2021.

This means that for mailed applications, they must be postmarked Dec. 20, 2021. Applications submitted later than this date will not be accepted.

One of our 2020 highlights was the launch of our “#ImmigrationIsABlackIssue” awareness campaign, further amplifying the need to uplift our Black undocumented community. Immigration Is A Black issue is the motto and framing of the UndocuBlack Network since 2016. pic.twitter.com/NO62o25j0L
