Life After Congress
Rainey was appointed as a federal agent of the US Treasury Department for internal revenue in South Carolina. He held this position for two years, after which he began a career in private commerce, working in banking in Washington, DC, for five years. He retired in 1886 and returned to the town of his birther, where he died in 1887.
