The film was shot throughout Costa Chica. Costa Chica is known for having the highest population of Afro-Mexicans in Mexico, the region spanning the coast of Guerrero and Oaxaca. Oaxaca is close to the Guatemalan border and Oaxaca City is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Afro-Mexicans makeup just 1 percent of the population and treated as untouchables.

It wasn’t easy getting the local actors to agree to take part in the project. Perez-Solano recruited local, non-professional actors for the film.

“One day a man asked me for permission to take a picture and then he told me that he wanted me to act in a movie,” actor Felipe Neri Corcuera Acevedo told Verne. “I did not believe it. When he came back and I saw that it was true, I did not back down, I kept my word, but I always made it clear that I did not know how to act.”
