Karen Hunter and guest host Amber Cabral criticized the reported firing of Ryan Clark, saying the former NFL player and ESPN analyst was treated without basic professional courtesy.
During Hunter’s SiriusXM show, the pair discussed reports that Clark learned he was being dismissed while still on the air. Hunter called the situation “wild business” and questioned why the decision was allowed to leak before Clark was formally told.
“I think most organizations struggle with the idea that you can lay people off compassionately,” Cabral said. “There is a way to do this that is respectful and considerate and organized.” Cabral said the leak suggested “too many people were involved” and called the handling of Clark’s exit a sign of “lack of professional maturity.”
Hunter agreed, saying, “Letting a man go in the middle of his show is wild. It’s nasty work.”
The conversation later pivoted to Clark’s willingness to speak directly about race, sports and media. Hunter then referenced his defense of WNBA star Angel Reese and said Clark had always spoken from an authentic social justice perspective.
“I don’t know why Ryan Clark was among all of the people that got swept up,” Hunter continued. She added that Clark’s response centered other employees who lost their jobs rather than himself.
According to Cabral, Clark’s independent podcast may have made him less dependent on ESPN, but she cautioned that corporations can become uncomfortable when employees build influence outside company platforms.
“Folks don’t like when you get to be shiny in more than one place,” she said.
Cabral then urged workers to prepare for sudden career changes by identifying transferable skills and creating their own stability.
“You might get asked to go whether you’re good or not,” she added. “You might get asked to go because you’re good.”
