Fernando Tatis Jr.
Team: San Diego Padres
Born: San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic
Age: 20
2018 Stats: .286 BA, 16 HR, 43 RBI (AA)
Analysis: Another 20-year-old bluechip son of a former big leaguer, Tatis is the highest ranked prospect to make a Major League roster on Opening Day. Baseball America’s #2 overall prospect possesses the rare combination of speed and power at the shortstop position.
Tatis enters the big leagues as a solid hitter with the potential to be one of the top home run threats at his position. Tatis is also a threat on the basepaths, where he stole 16 bases in 88 games for San Diego’s AA-affiliate last season. In 2017, Tatis was the first 18-year-old to hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in Midwest League history. He’ll team up with newly acquired star third baseman Manny Machado to form one of the league’s most exciting shortstop/third base duos.
