A new “Critter Fixer” veterinarian hospital has recently opened inside a local Smyrna, Georgia PetSmart store. Critter Fixers is a brand established by two Black veterinarians, Dr. Vernard Hodges and Dr. Terrence Ferguson, in 1999. Potential customers can find the veterinary hospital at 2540 Cumberland Blvd. and the establishment is now accepting new pet patients.
Dr. Hodges and Dr. Ferguson began the business in a 1,000-square feet location located in Bonaire, Georgia. Over the years, Critter Fixers has evolved into a popular veterinary hospital and the star of a reality television show. The new location was made possible through PetSmart Veterinary Services (PVS) which is an independent business ownership model that offers veterinarians the opportunity to open their own practice.
“I’m especially passionate about working with PVS because investment is a huge barrier to owning a practice,” noted Dr. Hodges in a press release. Working with a known brand such as PetSmart will help to provide Critter Fixers with more exposure and clientele. Senior vice president of vet health services at PVS, John Bork, believes the business model helps to shift the balance of power in favor of veterinarians. “Our partnership with Dr. Hodges and Dr. Ferguson provides more opportunities for veterinarians to excel in their career and focus on what they love – caring for animals,” stated Bork.
The veterinary hospital held a grand opening celebration on Saturday, June 17 that was open to the community. People were able to meet the team and hear more about the services offered. The first 50 attendees received a free $10 PetSmart gift card and the first 25 pets received a free dental evaluation.
Dr. Paul Norwood, will be the primary practicing veterinarian and part owner of the hospital. Dr. Norwood is a Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine graduate with more than 25 years of experience. Services offered include preventative and critical care, vaccinations and more. Customers can bring their cats, dogs, reptiles, birds and other specialty animals for reliable high-quality care.
Dr. Hodges and Dr. Ferguson will be opening a second PVS location at A PetSmart location in Warner Robins and additional locations are expected to be announced. The duo plan to continue expanding the business and inspiring future generations of Black veterinarians.
