Get your finest silk pajamas ready and pour out a little something smooth because our favorite midnight balladeer has officially taken his final bow.

Freddie Jackson, the undisputed king of the 1980s “Quiet Storm” era and the voice behind the blueprint for Black love songs, passed away on Monday (Oct.5).

    He was 69.

While our hearts are heavy after his family shared the news of his transition, we aren’t mourning a loss today.

We are celebrating a man who gave us ten #1 R&B hits, single-handedly kept the incense industry in business and provided the absolute soundtrack to our cookouts, family reunions and two-steps for over four decades.

Mr. Jackson’s family shared the heartbreaking news of his passing on his official Instagram account, leaving fans and loved ones in shock, but they chose not to disclose the circumstances surrounding his death or its location.

Known for his smooth, velvety voice, he had a unique ability to blend soft vocals with the soothing sounds of saxophones and electronic pianos, creating a soundtrack that connected deeply with late-night listeners.

According to The New York Times, in a touching turn of events, Mr. Jackson had opened up about his struggle with kidney disease in 2024, revealing that he was actively collaborating with the National Kidney Foundation to raise awareness about the condition and its impact.

Paul Laurence, a close friend and partner who wrote Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake) for Mr. Jackson and worked on other songs with him, told The Times in an interview that, “It was one of those amazing voices, a truly rare voice you only hear once in a lifetime.”

Rock Me Tonight, his first solo album, was released in 1985 and topped the Billboard R&B albums chart for 14 weeks. The album included two hit singles that reached number one on the Billboard R&B singles chart: the title track and You Are My Lady. Additionally, two other hits, “

He’ll Never Love You Like I Do and Love Is Just a Touch Away, made it into the Top 10. In 1986, he earned two Grammy nominations for best new artist and best male R&B vocal performance.

This success made Mr. Jackson a major star in R&B. His second album, Just Like the First Time, released in 1986, spent 26 weeks at the top of the Billboard R&B albums chart and featured three number one R&B singles: Tasty Love, Have You Ever Loved Somebody, and Jam Tonight.

Frederick Anthony Jackson, born on October 2, 1957, in Harlem, was raised by his mother, Juanita Lavinia Jackson. While growing up there, he trained as a gospel singer at the White Rock Baptist Church, where he met  Mr. Laurence.

In the early 1980s, he moved to California and dove into the music scene as a member of the funk band Mystic Merlin. The experience further shaped his artistic identity, but the call of New York would prove to be too strong. And upon returning, he reconnected with Mr. Laurence, who was then working at Hush Productions. There, the duo collaborated on several projects, with Jackson not only recording demo songs but also lending his vocals as a backup singer for the great Melba Moore.

Their combined efforts bore fruit in 1986 when they released the hit song A Little Bit More, which soared to No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart, marking a major milestone in his career and solidifying his undeniable talent in the music industry.

He continued to make music long after he was at the height of his fame, releasing his final album, My First Love in 2023, a dedication to his mother.

The curtain may have closed on an unforgettable life, but Freddie Jackson’s music is practically immortal.

He didn’t just sing songs; he engineered the backdrop to our lives.

So don’t mourn the silence. Just throw on a playlist, let that legendary tenor fill the room and celebrate a voice that will simply live forever.

    Rest in honor, Freddie.
