The Democrats are celebrating after Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear proved victorious in his run for reelection.
Beshear defeated Republican challenger Daniel Cameron, the state’s attorney general. Former President Donald Trump backed Cameron, but it was not enough to best Beshear, who has a 60% approval rating in the state.
According to presidential candidate Chris Christie, Cameron’s close ties to Trump aided in his downfall.
“Daniel Cameron made a huge mistake by embracing Donald Trump and selling his soul to him. And that’s what he did,” Christie said on CNN. “And the voters of Kentucky, a very red state, as you noted, gave their verdict on politicians who sell their soul to Donald Trump.”
“Daniel Cameron was a rising star in the Republican Party until he decided to throw his lot in with Donald Trump,” Christie added. “I mean, let’s face it: Donald Trump is political and electoral poison down the ballot.”
Cameron was also in favor of the Supreme Court’s decision to reverse Roe vs. Wade, which Beshear criticized.
“As attorney general, I fought for (abortion exemptions) and I’m going to continue to fight for them,” Beshear said during a debate in Northern Kentucky last month. “My opponent’s position would give a rapist more rights than their victim. It is wrong. We need to change this law. We need to make sure that those individuals have that option.”
“Well, I’m the pro-life candidate, and I’ve said that Andy Beshear is the abortion candidate. I’ve also said that if the legislature were to give me a bill with exceptions in it, I would certainly sign it,” Cameron said.
