Tomorrow is Marcus Garvey’s birthday. To remember him, his son Dr. Julius Garvey is asking to help clear his father’s name. With the hashtags #PardonGarvey and #MarcusGarveyDay, influencers, activists and celebrities will be taking to social media to deliver a message: “President Biden, Pardon Marcus Garvey!”
Rev. Al Sharpton, Dr. Greg Carr, Roy Wood Jr., Yvette Nicole Brown, Clay Cane, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Sway Calloway and Rex Chapman will be among those participating in #MarcusGarveyDay. The push will be propelled by a petition penned by Karen Hunter, whose 2015 effort to remove the Confederate flag from the statehouse of South Carolina garnered 577.000 signatures in three days.
“The hope is that we can get enough signatures to pressure Pres. Biden to do a very simple thing—pardon Marcus Garvey,” said Hunter, host of the Karen Hunter Show on SiriusXM. “One hundred years is too long to keep this injustice going.”

In the petition, Hunter explains why the government needs to clear Garvey’s name, and why they need to act now:
“Marcus Mosiah Garvey inspired every major Black movement of the 20th century. He fought for the liberation of his people. Now it’s time for us to fight for him! Clear his name! Free Marcus Garvey now!” Hunter’s petition reads in part.
There is also a mention of Jack Johnson’s 2020 pardon.
Sign this petition and ask President Joe Biden to posthumously pardon Marcus Garvey.
In addition to the petition, there will be a special apparel drop with the proceeds going to the Marcus Garvey Institute for Human Development (www.themarcusgarvey.com).
