On The Come Up by Angie Thomas

Angie Thomas’s debut novel, The Hate U Give, about a 16-yea-old girl who witnessed the murder of her best friend at the hands of police and the community unrest that followed, was so powerful it was made into a big-screen film starring Amandla Stenberg. In On the Come Up, Thomas once again follows another 16-year-old as she pursues her dreams as a hip hop star. The author, who is an avid Tupac fan, weaves music (mostly hip hop) into her work and makes it one of the main characters.
