Darryl George is an 18 year old Black student at Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu, Texas. George has been suspended from school since August 31st for his hairstyle. George has an intricate loc hairstyle that has been deemed a violation of school code. Now, after spending over a month on in-school suspension, George is now being sent to a disciplinary alternative school due to his “failure to comply.”
The CRWN Act (“Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair”) was a law that took effect in Texas on September 1. The law combat hair-based discrimination. Still, Darryl George is facing outright discrimination for his natural hairstyle, and this discrimination is impeding his access to education.
