On September 27, 2026, the global Black world lost a piece of its foundational rhythm.

Singer, songwriter and guitarist, Slinger Francisco, best known as the legendary Mighty Sparrow, passed away at age 91, leaving behind a sonic empire that literally taught the diaspora how to dance through resistance.

Dubbed the “Calypso King of the World,” Sparrow wasn’t just an entertainer; he was a brilliant musical storyteller who used the heartbeat of Trinidad to fight colonialism, uplift Black pride and demand respect for Caribbean culture.

Although this is a heavy loss, we are celebrating a giant whose footprint on Black music history is permanent.

As reported by NBC News, Francisco, known for his hit calypso song Jean and Dinah from 1956, passed away peacefully in New York with his family by his side, according to a family statement. They mentioned that he died after a “brief illness” but did not share any more details.

“He was an institution in the entertainment industry, well admired for his skill and finesse as a singer, songwriter and mentor; beloved by many,” Francisco’s family said in a statement.

Trinidad and Tobago is the birthplace of calypso music and among its many stars, Mighty Sparrow stands out, having crafted a treasure trove of hits that resonate with fans around the world. Songs like Both of Them, Congo Man, Mr. Walker, and The Lizard not only showcase his lyrical prowess but also reflect the rich storytelling tradition of calypso. With his catchy melodies and sharp social commentary, he had become a symbol of Trinidadian pride, influencing countless artists and keeping the essence of the genre alive.

Francisco, affectionately known as “Birdie,” was a prolific artist whose passion for music spanned an impressive sixty-year career, during which he crafted hundreds of captivating songs. His performances took him to stages around the globe, including the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York City, where he shared the infectious rhythms of calypso with diverse audiences.

Rudolph Ottley, a respected cultural historian and author from Trinidad, recently highlighted Francisco’s lifelong commitment to elevating calypso music. His heritage is not just in the notes he played, but in how he connected people across borders.

“The Mighty Sparrow was the supreme entertainer, a cultural revolutionary and one of the world’s greatest calypsonians,” Ottley said in an interview with The Associated Press as reported by NBC.

Francisco was born on July 9, 1935, in Grand Roy, Grenada. When he was just 1 year old, his family moved to Trinidad. In the 1960s, he relocated to New York City, where he lived for the rest of his life. Throughout his career, he wrote over 500 songs and released more than 70 albums.

He even collaborated with Jamaican artist Byron Lee on the song Only a Fool Breaks His Own Heart, which became a hit in the U.K. and the Netherlands, staying on the charts for 27 weeks and reaching No. 2 in 1978.

Ainsley King, the president of the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation (TUCO), a nonprofit that supports more than 600 Calypso artists, paid tribute to the late singer as well, in a statement.

“I recognise Sparrow as a giant whose contribution cannot be measured by awards, titles or recordings alone,” King wrote. “Through his music, he gave voice to the humour, struggles, politics, relationships, social realities and everyday experiences of Caribbean people. His songwriting, delivery, wit and stage presence set standards that generations of calypsonians continue to study and admire.

King continued. “Even as we mourn, we must also celebrate an extraordinary life and ensure that future generations understand the magnitude of the legacy he leaves behind,” she continued. “The voice of the Birdie may be silent, but his songs, stories and contribution to calypso will continue to live.”

The singer’s fanbase even spans from the Pentagon to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Gen. Colin Powell didn’t mince words, calling him the actual “Mount Olympus of Calypso.”  Bob Dylan went full fanboy in the notes for his 1985 box set, Biograph, crowning Sparrow the undisputed champ of creativity, intelligence and clever wordplay. “Mighty Sparrow was and probably still is the best,” Dylan wrote, adding that a live Sparrow set is pure adrenaline. “His performances are like boxing matches, and he always comes out on top, with a band of fifteen or twenty musicians playing really loud … He’s amazing.”

The Calypso King of the World may have left the stage, but the party he started isn’t wrapping up anytime soon. Slinger Francisco spent decades showing the globe how to move, think and laugh all at the same time, weaving sharp social commentary into irresistible basslines.

While the loss of his reverberating voice leaves a massive void in Caribbean culture, his incredible catalog ensures he remains completely untouchable.

So, don’t cue the somber silence. Instead, crank up the volume on his classics, hit the dance floor in your living room and celebrate the fact that the Mighty Sparrow’s rhythm is officially locked into the universe forever.
