Sean “Diddy” Combs is currently at the center of debate after announcing his endorsement of Joe Biden for president and launching a new Black political party.
Combs announced both during a sitdown with media personality Charlamagne Tha God.
“The number on goal is to unify behind a Black agenda,” he said during the Revolt TV interview. “If Trump gets elected, I really do believe in my heart there’ll be a race war. That’s why this message is not just to Black people. This message is for everybody. This man is really trying to turn us against each other and put us in this situation.”
While he endorses Biden, his creation of the party amplifies his overall lack of confidence in the system, even if Biden is elected next month.
“It would be irresponsible of me to have us hold our vote hostage, but it would also be irresponsible of me to just let this moment go by — the world is watching — and not do everything I can to make sure that, going forth, we are part of the narrative, that we own our politics,” he said.
According to the website, Our Black Party “exists to advance a political agenda that addresses the needs of Black people.
The mission statement goes on to say the party envisions “an America where Black people are liberated and participate freely in the political, economic, and social systems that work together for our benefits. We will power the Black political agenda by developing a coalition of people and organizations committed to building Black political power and fiercely advocating for radical change that dramatically improves the quality of life for Black people in America,” the statement adds.
The launch has been met with skepticism, many questioning whether Combs is qualified to lead a political party.
He is not the only high profile celebrity this past week to face backlash over their political motives. Rapper Ice Cube shocked his fans when he announced that he had teamed up with the Trump administration to create the ‘Platinum Plan.’
Despite the pushback, Cube defended his actions: “I didn’t run to go work with any campaign. Both campaigns contacted me. Both campaigns wanted to talk to me about the Contract with Black America. One campaign said, ‘We love what you have, but let’s really dig into after the election.’ And one campaign said ‘We love what you have, do you mind talking to us about it?’ And that’s what I did, so I didn’t run to nobody.”
