Westerners Called Them “Dahomey Amazons”
European observers compared them to the Amazon warriors of Greek mythology. Women became Mino mostly voluntarily. But some were enlisted into the fighting corps involuntarily by husbands and fathers who thought their behavior was unruly. The Mino training was thought to instill disciple and hone the aggression for the purpose of war.
