He Gained His First Experience as a Head Coach in 2015
While this season marks Borrego’s first year as a full-time head coach, he was first named interim head coach of the Orlando Magic in 2015—taking over for Jacques Vaughn. At the time, Borrego was the youngest head coach in the league at 37. He coached the last 30 games of the season, finishing with a 10-20 record during that stretch.
The team didn’t muster a lot wins, but they did improve during Borrego’s short stint. When he was hired, Orlando was ranked 25th in offense and 26th in defense. But by the end of the season, they finished tied for 23rd and 18 in those respective categories.
