This week, Florida’s Gov. Ron DeSantis doubled down on his efforts to ban books with supposed “race based teaching.” Under Florida’s House Bill, 1467 schoolbooks must be reviewed by a district employee holding a valid educational media specialist certificate to ensure they’re free of pornography or certain race-based teachings.

Author Christina Proenza-Coles holds a dual doctorate in sociology and history from the New School for Social Research.
