The Entertainment Weekend Recap: May 29th

The 2023 NCAA men’s and women’s basketball champions kicked off their weekend with a visit to the White House. President Joe Biden and first lady Dr. Jill Biden welcomed both teams after their successful season on Friday.  Louisiana State University Tigers were honored first and during the visit, Sa’Myah Smith passed out while President Joe Biden was speaking. Fortunately, the event continued after Smith regained consciousness and the University of Connecticut Huskies enjoyed their own celebration soon after.

Although Friday was a day of celebration for the NCAA champions, T.I. and Tiny did not share the same sentiments. The couple lost their $100 million lawsuit against the toy company MGA Entertainment. Tiny formed the OMG Girlz in 2009 and called out MGA for allegedly stealing the group’s likeness for its L.O.L Surprise OMG dolls. The due claims that MGA failed to secure a licensing agreement and allegedly refused to discuss compensation.

Friends of the Harris family, Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker, also made headlines over the weekend as it was announced that the duo has joined the production team for the Tony Award-winning musical, The Wiz. A tour of the play is scheduled for this Fall from September 23-30 before returning to Broadway for a limited time in 2024. The Real Housewives of Atlanta stars will be working alongside the likes of Schele Williams, JaQuel Knight and Amber Ruffin.

Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid made its way to theaters and the film has been a success at the box office. The film is estimated to have made a $118 million domestic debut. The new Little Mermaid stars Halle Bailey as Ariel and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula. Other cast members include Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Javier Bardem, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni and Art Malik.

Barbie is stepping out of her box and onto the big screen as a new film will be released on July 21. You can’t have a Barbie movie without including the Queen of the Barbz in some way. The Barbie movie soundtrack will feature a joint track from Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice, titled “Barbie World.” Fans will also hear from other talents including Lizzo, Dua Lipa and Khalid. Barbie will be played by actress Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will play Ken.
