The Weekend Entertainment Recap: January 2nd

As we entered a new year over the weekend, Rolling Stone released a list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time. The list was compiled by Rolling Stone’s staff and key contributors and was doubled in size from the previous list published in 2008. Rolling Stone’s new list featured artists whose vocals have “shaped history and defined our lives.” Names featured on the list include Aretha Franklin (who held the No. 1 spot), Whitney Houston, Ray Charles, Sam Cook, Mariah Carey, Sza, Beyoncé, Stevie Wonder and Otis Redding.

The platform encouraged readers to keep in mind that the list is of the greatest singers and not necessarily the greatest voices. Compilers focused on “originality, influence, the depth of an artist’s catalog, and the breadth of their musical legacy.”

After months of anticipation and posting pictures of her baby bump, R&B singer Summer Walker welcomed twins into the world over the weekend. The singer made the announcement on New Year’s Eve and thanked her birthing team for the support. Walker stated, “I’m so proud of myself. Just sharing to inspire other women, cause I know once you carry twins to almost 42 weeks, especially with one breech, people will try to steer you towards induction or C-section.” She shared her experience of having a natural home birth and noted that the process took 7 hours. The 26-year-old is now a mother of three.

Based on his recent behaviors, it probably won’t be long before Nick Cannon welcomes another child into the world as well. The “Wild’n Out” creator has developed quite a reputation for all of his recent additions to his family.

The 42-year-old father of 12 spoke with Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper during CNN’s “New Year’s Eve Live” and touched on his growing family. Cohen asked the actor if he would get a vasectomy and Cannon replied, “Is that what you want me to get? This is my body, my choice!” Cannon continued on to describe the joy his family brings him while also adding that he does not have a plan.

While Summer Walker and Nick Cannon embrace parenthood, Angela Basset’s 16-year-old son pulled a not-so-funny prank on her over the weekend. A new trend on TikTok has children pranking their parents by telling them celebrities have died. Slater Vance hopped on the trend and told his mother that fellow actor, Michael B. Jordan, was dead.

The news prompted an emotional response from Basset before she was told that the news was untrue. The video has since been removed from TikTok and Vance issued an apology after receiving backlash from social media users.

Although the news of Michael B Jordan was fake, unfortunately, Memphis rapper Gangsta Boo has been confirmed dead. Gangsta Boo was born Lola Mitchell on August 7, 1979, and became popular for rapping with the group Three 6 Mafia. Gangsta Boo died on Sunday, January 1, 2023, and more details surrounding her death are developing. The rapper released her first solo album, Enquiring Minds, in 1998 and was recently featured on a single with Latto and native Memphis rapper GloRilla.
