Sony announced the worldwide launch of their latest Marvel video game.
Released last Tuesday (Sept. 15), the game, titled simply “Marvel’s Wolverine,” follows the titular character as he undergoes a journey looking for answers about his past. A majority of the storyline revolves around James “Logan” Howlett rejoining Team X after he is found with amnesia. Throughout the course of the game, he is supported by other characters, including Jean Grey, Sabretooth and Bolivar Trask.
The setting of the game includes a variety of locations inspired by real-life areas, including Tokyo, Canadians forests and Madripoor jungles.
“When we set off to make Marvel’s Wolverine, our goal was to create an authentic and compelling Wolverine experience that delivers a new, unique story while remaining true to iconic characters,” said Insomniac Games’ creative director, Marcus Smith, per a statement. “Of course, that includes making players feel like Wolverine from start to finish. We are extremely proud of what the Insomniac team achieved alongside Sony Interactive Entertainment and Marvel Games.”
The latest Wolverine game is amongst the first Sony has released since announcing they will eventually stop physical releases.
Earlier this year, in late July, Sony said its PlayStation games will no longer run on physical discs. The change is set to take effect by January 2028.
The change has met significant backlash, with more than 170,000 gamers signing a petition protesting the end of physical discs. Instead, all new games will be digital or available as a box with only a download code.
So far, the petition has generated over 380,000 signatures.
Along with the lack of ownership, the fans highlighted the impact it will have on factory workers. Sony has reportedly already reassigned the staff members at one of their biggest disc production plants. They are reportedly making micro lenses instead, according to the latest report by The Verge.
Retailers and distributors are also set to be affected.
None of the existing video games will be impacted by Sony’s recent change.
“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today,” said Sony in their PlayStation blog. “We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store.”
