Senegalese soccer star Sadio Mane, who also plays for British Premier League Football club Liverpool, has donated $694,000 to help build a hospital in his hometown of Bambali.
Bambali, which currently has a population of approximately 2000 people, does not have a hospital and is located 400 kilometers away from the capital of the country, Dakar.
“Sadio Mané has presented the Head of State with an ambitious plan to build a hospital in Bambali and is counting on state support for medical personnel,” read a statement from Senegal Presidency on Twitter.
Mane welcomed the president’s praise:
“Very honored by the audience that the Head of State, His Excellency @Macky_Sall granted me. A good time to discuss football but also our social projects.”
This is not the first significant donation Made has made in his hometown.
In 2019, Mane donated close to $350,000 to build a school in Bambali. He has also built a mosque.
Mane says he is focused on helping his communities rather than living a lavish lifestyle.
“Why would I want ten Ferraris, 20 diamond watches, or two planes? What will these objects do for me and for the world? I was hungry, and I had to work in the field; I survived hard times, played football barefooted, I did not have an education and many other things, but today with what I earn thanks to football, I can help my people,” he told as.com.
“I built schools, a stadium, we provide clothes, shoes, food for people who are in extreme poverty. In addition, I give 70 euros per month to all people in a very poor region of Senegal which contributes to their family economy. I do not need to display luxury cars, luxury homes, trips and even planes. I prefer that my people receive a little of what life has given me.”
