Civil rights attorney and political commentator Qasim Rashid warned that President Donald Trump could attempt another coup, raising concerns about potential interference in future elections during an appearance on SiriusXM’s “The Karen Hunter Show.”
Speaking with host Karen Hunter, Rashid said he fears the administration could use federal immigration enforcement and other measures to disrupt voting and prevent election results from being certified.
“I don’t know how confident I am that we’re going to have a free and fair election,” Rashid shared. “I can see this man in the White House try to deploy ICE to block people from voting in certain areas, seize polling machines, block off, you know, the clerks of states before they can certify elections.”
His remarks warned of possible future actions, not evidence of an established plan by the administration. Rashid urged Americans to remain vigilant, citing the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, when rioters disrupted Congress as lawmakers gathered to certify the 2020 presidential election results.
“I think we need to be on guard and assume there’s going to be a coup attempt by this guy and then breathe a sigh of relief when there’s not,” Rashid noted. “If anyone thinks I’m overreacting, it means you were sleeping on Jan. 6, 2020. So, or 2021,” he added, correcting himself. “I think we have to take this extraordinarily seriously or we might be facing irreparable harm to our democracy.”
Hunter agreed with his concerns, saying she had been reluctant to discuss the possibility because she did not want to frighten listeners.
“I haven’t talked about it so much because I don’t want to be hyper. I don’t want to, you know, scare people, but I think you’re absolutely right,” she revealed to her audience, going on to address voter participation, arguing that a larger turnout could make attempts to interfere with election results more difficult.
“If you overwhelm the electorate, then he can’t, you know, it’s gonna be harder to steal, but he’s still gonna try,” she continued.
The conversation followed a caller’s question about international conflicts and political instability. Rashid expressed concern about ongoing crises involving Palestinians, Iran, Congo and Sudan, warning that widespread instability could lead to further conflict.
“And we’re at a cycle in world history where we’re seeing global upheaval because there’s just abject corruption,” he said.
The attorney also discussed the ongoing efforts to silence people who criticize government actions and racial disparities in the justice system.
Rashid divulged that he is facing another challenge to his law license after criticizing a judicial ruling on social media. He claimed three previous challenges were unsuccessful and that defending himself again could cost between $10,000 and $20,000.
“Fortunately, I’m in a place where I can afford to do that. But most people aren’t,” he told Hunter.
“That’s the point that they want to intimidate us into silence,” he added. “We are not going to back down. We’re going to double down because the alternative is actual fascism and that’s just not a future I’m willing to tolerate.”
“Me either,” Hunter responded.
