NBA Players honor Eric Garner
LeBron James and Kyrie Irving were among NBA players to wear black “I Can’t Breathe” t-shirts during warmups before a Nets-Cavaliers game in 2014. The phrase was some of the last words uttered by Garner before he died during a confrontation with New York police officers on Staten Island. Garner was placed in a chokehold by one of the cops.
“Obviously, as a society we have to do better,” James said when asked about the shirts. “We have to be better for one another. It doesn’t matter what race you are. It’s more of a shout out to the family more than anything, because they’re the ones that should be getting all the energy and effort.”
