It was Dungey who made the call to her sister, actress Merrin Dungey, to inform her that she would be replaced on the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff, Private Practice. Audra McDonald took over the role of Naomi Bennett, a doctor married to Dr. Sam Bennett, played by Taye Diggs. According to a Los Angeles Times, many saw her ability to fire her sister as proof that Dungey had what it took to be a network executive. Her sister later congratulated her on her new position.
