1. W.E.B. Dubois Thought The Statue Was Hypocritical

According to the National Park Service (NPS), first African American to earn a doctorate from Harvard and one of the founders of the N.A.A.C.P., wrote in his autobiography that the statue did not assist the formerly enslaved gain equality. “African Americans rarely used the Statue as a relevant symbol for their struggle,” the NPS said DuBois wrote. “They were reluctant to embrace the symbol of a nation which would not fully include them as citizens.”
