2. The Author of the Act Ran For President

Senator Lyman Trumbull, from the state of Illinois, was the author of the Civil Rights Act of 1866 and   introduced the bill in the Senate. Trumbull was a presidential nominee for the Liberal Republican Party in 1972, but lost the nomination to New York Senator Horace Greely, who eventually lost the presidency to Ulysses S. Grant.
