Ben Jealous, former head of the NAACP, won his primary race in Maryland for Governor tonight, defeating Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III.

Jealous is backed by Sen. Kamala Harris and Los Angeles Mayor Gil Garcetti, and had Bernie Sanders by his side as he delivered his victory speech. If elected in November, Jealous would become the first governor from the Global Majority in Maryland’s history.

Jealous’s Maryland roots goes four generations deep. In the below interview he shares with Karen Hunter why he believes he is uniquely qualified to be governor of Maryland. He also talks about his work with the NAACP and his fight for social justice.
