The Hub’s Entertainment Watch List: Abbott Elementary

One show that has managed to capture the heart of millions of Americans is ABC’s hit series, Abbott Elementary. The series, which was created by the talented Quinta Brunson, first debuted on December 7, 2021. Now the series has returned for its second season and fans are enjoying this season just as much as the first one.

Abbott Elementary was inspired by some of Brunson’s own life experiences. Her mother taught at the same institution for 40 years which provided a foundation for the series. However, it was a middle school teacher of Brunson’s, Ms. Abbott, that served as inspiration for the namesake show.

The series follows a group of teachers as well as the principal of an underserved west Philadelphia public school. The mockumentary series stars Brunson, as Janine Teagues, a teacher eager to lead the next generation of students despite having limited resources. Teagues is joined by fellow teachers, Gregory Eddie (Tyler James Williams) and Jacob Hill (Chris Perfetti).

Like every school, there are also veteran teachers who the newer teachers look to for advice. Barbara Howard, who is played by legendary actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, is the teacher that everyone goes to and they seek guidance from Melissa Schemmenti (Lisa Ann Walter). The school would not be complete without a principal, Ava Coleman, who is played by Janelle James.

Despite the faulty lights, old reading time rugs, and limited support, each teacher is determined to help their students succeed in life. The teachers are clearly overworked but it does not get in the way of their passion for teaching students.  Brunson’s character is extremely dedicated to her job and only desires to be like the teachers she looks up to. Miss Teagues can often be found trying to secure additional funding or supplies for her students since the school district lacks resources.

Viewers can watch the Emmy award-winning series on a variety of platforms including ABC Network, where new episodes air every Wednesday at 9:00 pm (8:00 pm CST). The series is also available on streaming platforms  HBO Max, Prime Video, Apple TV and more.
